ADOT is the managing entity for this project because the construction area calls within ADOT right-of-way. The city and ADOT will share the cost of the improvement.

Timeline. ADOT is expected to deliver the 30-percent design document by the end of 2019. Assuming design work proceeds as planned, construction is expected to begin after July 2021. A very rough estimate of construction duration is six months.

At this early phase of project consideration, ADOT believes it is possible to design the project entirely within right-of-way, meaning that all existing parking would be preserved. The city is committed to working with adjacent business and property owners to maximize parking retention and ensure access needs are met.

This project would allow a portion of traffic to bypass fully entering the SR89 / 179 roundabout by adding right-turn lanes for vehicles headed southbound and northbound. This will help avoid yielding and stopping conflicts for vehicles turning right. With no traffic it takes 12 minutes to travel from Bell Rock Blvd to the Y. In severe congestion it takes 36 minutes. This level of severe congestion occurred on six days between February and June 2017. This project is expected to reduce travel time from 36 to 24 minutes during peak congestion periods.

Estimated cost is $2.7 million.
