Below are the highlights of June City Council meetings and some decisions that may interest you:

  • On June 11, 2024, City Council approved the Notice of Intent to increase Wastewater Rates for residential and commercial customers by 3.6% and set the public hearing for August 13, 2024. At this meting in August, City Council will decide whether or not to increase rates. Learn more here.
  • On June 25, 2024, City Council adopted the Budget for Fiscal Year 2024-25 at $106,155,786. This budget reflects several one-time expenditure projects such as the parking garage and payment to full fund the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System liability.
  • On June 25, 2024, City Council overturned the Planning and Zoning Commission's (P&Z) April 16 approval of a development review application for the Oak Creek Heritage Lodge. Since the project received two appeals filed by residents, it required the project to go before the City Council to either uphold the decision of P&Z, overturn it, or send it back to P&Z. The final vote was 4-3 to overturn the P&Z decision and not approve their design review application.

Other news:

  • To help test the alleviation of traffic, on Friday, July 5th and Saturday, July 6th the City’s Police and Public Works staff will be conducting traffic tests at the Y and in Uptown, and on Saturday, July 6th at the new Pedestrian Crossing at Oak Creek. Staff will be monitoring and testing certain traffic scenarios at the Y and crosswalks in Uptown as congestion ramps up. Also, for the first time, we will test the use of the Pedestrian Crossing at Oak Creek, while closing the current street level crossing in front of the shopping areas. We are planning an official opening of the pedestrian crossing in the coming weeks, but because the undercrossing is substantially complete, it is possible to test its use this weekend. Monitoring and testing will occur generally between the hours of 11 am to 6 pm and involve brief interruptions to vehicle and pedestrian traffic at various locations within the Uptown and 179 Business Districts. Results of these tests will be shared at the SIM update to City Council at their 3 pm meeting on Wednesday, July 10th.
  • Starting this summer and as part of an effort to bring more sustainability education to the local school systems, the city’s BigBelly smart waste and recycling receptacles will feature climate change themed artwork by students at West Sedona School. Click here to learn more about the artwork and featured student artists!
  • The new Rotating Art Program display features paintings created by Ed Buonvecchio and photographs by Terry Shoulders available for public viewing through September 4. Book your appointment!
