Parking
More and better access to parking in Uptown creates better passage for residents on neighborhood streets by mitigating illegal parking. The focus is on existing lots and adjacent areas as well as consideration of possible new parking areas or future construction of a parking garage. Some off-street parking lots could be designated solely for tour bus parking and employee parking.
Parking garage
The City purchased land on Forest Road to construct a three-level parking garage for approximately 270 vehicles, with one level below grade.
Status
Important dates:
- Winter 2024 - construction of the parking structure begins
- Early 2026 - construction complete (approx.)
City Council approved the construction contract for the Uptown Parking Garage on May 14, 2024. Fann Contracting began excavation on in August 2024, including a combination of heavy digging, drilling, blasting, slope stabilization and export of the removed material. Blasting operations began at the end of August 2024 and are expected to occur on a weekly basis until the winter of 2024.
If you live within 500 feet of a planned blasting area, you should have completed a pre-blast survey with Arizona Monitoring Services. If you do not live in this area, no action is required. The Sedona Fire District will issue blasting permits for this project during the scheduled blasting window. Both the Fire District and Police Department have been notified and are involved as this project progresses. A Fire Marshal will be present when blasting operations occur. Blasting will cause dust within the blasting site but water spraying dust mitigation techniques will be deployed. Residents within 500 feet of blasting areas may notice more dust than usual, but it will diminish, enough to not affect air quality for a prolonged length of time.
Work will occur Monday through Thursday, from 6 AM to 5:30 PM. This work will require the closure of the public parking area on Forest Road north of the Fire District, and routine closure of a small portion along Forest Road in front of the Parking Garage site to all vehicular traffic. Please be aware of construction equipment, lane restrictions, reduced speeds and rough road conditions. Crews will work with residents to maintain access throughout construction operations.
McCarthy Building Companies will construct the parking structure. Follow-up notifications will be released prior to this work commencing.

Wayfinding
Wayfinding signs and kiosks have been installed in Uptown.
The entire wayfinding package includes vehicular, point-of-interest, and trailhead signage; signs that are located in ADOT right of way must meet that agency's design requirements. Signage improves awareness of and access to underutilized off-street public parking in the Uptown area and helps travelers find destinations more quickly, contributing to improved traffic flow. Citywide entryways sign locations and initial design has been identified.
Wayfinding signage will eventually extend through West Sedona, helping travelers find destinations more quickly.
One-way streets
The primary purpose behind considering one-way streets for Van Deren, Wilson and Smith in Uptown is to improve safety and facilitate safe parking on these very narrow streets. Consideration of the one-way street concept is on hold until the parking garage is complete, and the need and potential benefits/impacts can be further analyzed.
Outreach with residents will occur before any further potential action is taken.
