Home MenuSR179 - Y roundabout slip lanes
Status
This project was complete in the Spring of 2022.
The project focused on modernization enhancements to the roundabout and adjacent roadway including signing, striping, and pavement rehabilitation to improve safety and the efficiency of the roundabout operations. The contractor began with concrete replacement at crosswalk ramps and driveways, and paving was completed in mid-October of 2021. Final striping was complete in the Spring of 2022. Read more here.
The City will continue to look for ways to improve efficiency in this area in the future, as it is a known bottleneck during congested times.
History
Originally, this project consisted of slip lanes that would be added for 89A drivers heading from West Sedona to Southbound 179, and 179 drivers headed northbound on 89A towards Uptown.
Before any major components were constructed, analysis of directional signing and turn restrictions with a dedicated right-turn lane was completed at the "Y" roundabout to test the effectiveness of simpler solutions.
After a thorough analysis of the data, the ADOT project team and City did not see enough of a benefit from the dedicated right-turn lane test, and the slip lane modeling, to continue moving forward with the project as previously scoped.
As a result, the proposal to put a slip lane from 89A from West Sedona to southbound 179 through the ADOT property was not pursued, no lanes were added or changed, and there was no encroachment on private property.
Instead the modernization enhancements mentioned above were pursued.
