ADOT travel-time information signs are in operation on the I-17, SR 89A and SR 179 corridors. City projects are underway to study live displays of travel-time data and gather information on trip origins and destinations.
Camp Verde traveler information sign
ADOT is working on the design for a Dynamic Message Sign (DMS) to be installed on northbound I-17 just north of General Crook Trail on-ramp. The DMA will display travel times to Sedona allowing travelers to choose SR 89A via SR 260 versus SR 179 prior to the Camp Verde exit. The goal is to reduce congestion by actively informing and allowing motorists to decide what route to travel with current travel time estimations. Construction bids are to be advertised in December 2023.
Cameras on SR 179 and in Uptown
Cameras were installed along SR 179 near Tlaquepaque and at midblock in Uptown to monitor current traffic conditions. The City's Information Technology Department is working on how to make the camera photos publicly viewable. Staff is pursuing other locations for cameras as well.
How these strategies contribute to improved traffic flow
Advance information manages traffic flow by helping drivers find less busy routes.
With no traffic, it takes 12 minutes to travel from Bell Rock Blvd to the Y. In severe congestion it takes 36 minutes. This level of severe congestion occurred on 6 days between February 1 and June 4, 2017. With this strategy, a severely congested trip would be reduced from 36 minutes to 26 minutes. Keeping drivers informed of real travel time information enables them to make informed decisions regarding alternative routes.
